3/15/2024 0 Comments Home depot stainless steel boltsAbout 5% of the bolts that I have come across have been un-useable. When I buy from OSH or Home Depot I have to check all the threads to make sure that none of them are fouled from shipping. The reason why I like McMaster the best is that I had purchased a few boxes of grade 5 from them and they were of alot better quality than the other places I have boughten bolts from. I have a feeling that HD, OSH, and most of the bigger "Home improvement " place don't test there hardware or care so much for the quality, just the bottom line. Unless of course the are cheap knock offs. Any of you that have will-called there know what I am talking about.Ī grade 8 fastener should be a grade 8 fastener. But I like McMaster-Carr's bolts the best. I like to go to OSH for most hardware locally they have a far better selection than most of the other places around here. Or let's not use cromoly for any thing because it breaks easier than mild steel. Let's all make axle shafts from mild steel they will not shear as easy. That statement makes me wonder why aircraft companies and race cars use hardware superior to grade 8 instead of a softer bolt material. I don't know about that crap that a grade 5 will outlast a grade 8 beacuse it can bend easier. ![]() You have to make sure the bolts are tightened properly or you will increase the odds of failure. A properly torqued bolt or even over tightened will out last a loose bolt. They are not designed as pivots, pins or any other such non-sense. FWIW, I use oversized Grade 5 for bolting through rubber body mounts, Grade 8 For securing primary structure together (engine, frame, cage) īolts are designed as clamps. And that would make the cost prohobitive. The only real way you know you will get claimed value is to get certs. However, assurity that you get the fastener properties you expect from HD, Lowes, et al., good luck. Grade 8 allows you to use fewer or smaller fasteners to achieve the same holding force. However, the more ductile Grade 5 stretches without crtically failing.įor the situation where cyclic loading near peak load rating occurs, the Grade 5 fastener has less of a chance to fail critically, which is once reason why they are used prevailently. With the alloy Grade 8, there is very little ductility or plastic regime, so it fails critically after reaching yield. when both bolts are taken to yield (Grade 8 being higher, once again), the mode goes from elastic (spring back to normal shape) to plastic (once it's deformed, it stays deformed).
